Healing Digestion with Shiatsu and Chinese Medicine

A detailed weekend exploration

The sages of Traditional Eastern Medicine knew that “all disease begins in the gut”. Digestive disorders are some of the most commonly diagnosed in the modern world, affecting 70 million Americans and costing 100 billion in medical costs annually. Embracing an East-West view of digestion gives practitioners tools to heal digestive disorders from the inside out and help clients achieve greater vitality. As the body’s foundation, healing the gut can help patients heal from disorders as far-ranging as skin conditions, anxiety and depression, pain, and immune dysregulation.

In this class, we will explore multiple aspects of digestive health from an East-West perspective. We will learn the Eastern view of digestive physiology and health promotion through the digestive system, how to assess disruption, and commonly used strategies for restoring balance. We will practice hands-on techniques for assessing and healing through Hara (abdominal) massage, and learn acupressure techniques to benefit digestion. We will also explore adjunctive techniques that are easily incorporated by the hands-on practitioner to augment treatment effects. We will conclude with discussion of common digestive complaints from an East-West perspective, including Irritable Bowel Syndrome, constipation and diarrhea, Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis, reflux, and Leaky Gut Syndrome.
